Hi,

I have a problem that I am stumped as to how to fix and would like some help.  A former owner of my 2002 Jeep Liberty goofed up one of the spare tire lugnuts and now the spare will not come off.  I appreciate any help and advice.Jeep_Spare.jpg

Idhennigan,

How is the spare tire attached to the tailgate?

You will most likely have to lower the tailgate, remove any trim pieces and then REMOVE what ever is holding the spare tire to the tailgate FROM the tailgate.  Once off, you can figure out HOW to fix the issue with the missing/broken bolts.

You can always drill out the goofed up lugnut.  There are other ways to get it out as well, but without close photo's it is hard to make any real suggestions

Have you tried locking pliers to get it off?  Heat?

let us know

I tried locking pliers, they just spin on the "rounded off" lugnut.  Heat is my next try, just not sure what i can use to protect the rim from the torch.

There is a paste used in plumbing to protect things from heat. Put the paste all around the area on the wheel then disconnect your battery and weld a 3/4 nut or bolt to the lug. Then remove. If you fail to disconnect your battery you could fry your ecu so ,ALWAYS disconnect it when welding. Good luck

I wanted to update everybody, i took some of the advice i got and removed the tire and carrier from the tailgate.  This allowed my brother and i to drill out and grind off the stud from the back and remove the tire.  Thanks again for all the help and wisdom.
