Hi All!!! this is my first post and hope to get some good advice and tips for my build.

well my build story originally started when i first laid eyes on a 1972 chevy c10 swb when i was about 7 and always wanted one ever since, grew up in a crappy neighborhood in a big city with little support so my desire to wrench was unfortunately put on hold til a later date when i can do it all by myself.

Fast forward some bunch of years and here I am, with a project I'm long over due for.

I picked up this 1972 c20 long bed with the intentions of a daily driver i could modify/rebuild over time when time and funds allow. Previous owner made this out to be better than it really was granted it has  a very straight body and only one maybe two bad rust spots that will require cutting out and replacing.

After the two and a half hour drive home with my 4 year old sittin shotgun and the ignition switch loosing contact inside causing me to drive half way home holding the key in a certain position to keep it on. got it home but not before right as i pull in the radiator collides with the flex fan at about 1:30 am, sure the neighbors didn't care for that because i drove it about 150 yards down the driveway into its parking spot.

once home i swapped the radiator finding the previous owner relied the upper rad hose to keep the rad from hitting the fan and discovered he did this because he had a 1 ton rad in the 3/4 ton truck so the top mounts would not work. 

so got it swapped with another 1 ton rad because it was not only cheaper by about $75 but i had 0 cooling problems driving the truck loaded with every 1/2 ton 5 lug suspension to do a swap and extra parts (about 1200lbs) and it was the middle of September and in the upper 90s and again 0 cooling issues.

got to drive a few more miles before the rear end gave driving about 30mph, discovered the dana60 the previous owner "rebuilt" was improperly rebuilt, it looked like he used a bunch of strands of bailing wire crammed in where the spider gear cross pin retaining pin should have been so it sheared the bailing wire causing the spider gear cross pin to slide out and hit the pinion gear so boom it went, luckily no harm came to the housing so i was able to score a good set of 4:11 gears and posi i traded a alt bracket for and had the best local driveline shop in town do the install.

again got it going, swapped out the points for a msd streetfire hei with some super conductor wires and new plugs. was able to drive it a bit more before the motor started blowing gobs of black smoke, checked the plugs and 6 of the 8 cylinders had oily plugs and the motor had bad compression all around so my new mission was to either rebuild this original 402 big block, ls swap or find another low mile big block of some sort.

I was able to find a 396 with 2500 miles on the build, its .030 over so its a 402,lunati voodoo hyd flat tappet cam, forged pistons, 049 heads, roller rockers, holley street dominator intake,10:1 comp have yet to fire it as I'm towards the end of the swap.

at this point im just trying to get it running reliably for a daily driver so i have some wheels again then i can start really tending to the things i want to do like shorten the bed as much as i can behind the wheel,  make my own dash from door to door just just a cluster, door panels, seats, suspension, rebuild the original 402 to withstand 2 turbos and about 10lbs of boost, efi and some other stuff i want to keep secret for time being.

Well, you have chosen the road you are traveling carefully.  You have the skills.  And it's just a truck that you CAN wrench on. 

It will take long nights and weekends.  But in the end, YOU WILL BE PROUD to own that one.

This was my M1028A3 dually.  LOVED that truck.  Finally sold it.  Things change.  You move on.

I painted it.  With Behr HOUSE PAINT.  Came out pretty good.  For a military truck.

I admire you on this truck.  I just love this body style and I actually don't mind the long bed but if you convert it to a short bed that would be cool too.  This is exactly the project truck I will be getting before I retire because I want this style to be my everyday driver for my retirement truck.

What a great kid you have riding shotgun with you all the way home.  You need to get that cool son of yours and turn him into a gearhead, you won't regret it.  My son and I butt heads now because he's 21 and knows everything, LOL but, he told me he appreciated me letting him work with me on the Chevelle and teaching him how to work on cars.  He also had an old 1984 K5 Blazer that was fun working on and we got a lot of parts through LMC truck which the have almost every part you need.  Now I have a grandson that wants to help out.  

Please keep posting as you go through it so we can see your progress and remember to have fun, little by little, working on it. I have my 1971 Chevelle and most everything on it was a barter or trade or parts from swap meets. That will definitely keep costs down. Good luck.

That I really like Chevys from 46' up to and including 72'. They started to square off after that until around 87' then.... Well , let's just say the earlier one's are cool. If you want to gain some ponies (around 10 hp) I would remove the flex fan and replace it with a 16" electric. They are controlled by engine temp alone (unless you are running a/c) and are better for cooling the latent heat once the engine is shut down. It is also friendlier to little helpers as they are well guarded. Good luck on your journey. And please do share. Mike

72 seems to be a popular year according to some searches I did. One day Ill find the truck I want to do once I finish some long overdue projects.. Stalled by the fundage monster. I like the Flex a Lites or the SPAL fans and anything over 14" seems to work.
